There is no such thing as THE sustainability. Therefore, there is also not THE solution. We see ourselves as an important interface between theory and practice, between strategy and commitment, between reporting and communication, in expanding the options for action for our customers.
Our history
brainbows was founded in 2000 by Monika Langthaler and Christian Nohel. The two had previously worked together in science and politics for over 14 years – now they wanted to make a difference in the economy in terms of sustainability and environmental protection.
For Monika and Christian, the occupation of the Hainburger Au in 1984, which prevented the construction of a Danube power plant, was a key experience that continues to shape them today: then as now, they are committed to a socially and ecologically just future worth living.
In 1990, the two joined the then new Green movement. Monika Langthaler was the youngest member of the Austrian parliament at the time until 1999, while Christian Nohel was a political advisor in the Green Parliamentary Club. After ten years in politics, they called it a day – and started their next passion project: brainbows.
Monika and Christian were one of the first in Austria to bring the topic of sustainability into people’s minds and onto the management floors of companies – with a pragmatic and economically viable approach. Initially dismissed as an “orchid topic”, developments have proved them right: today, sustainability and the transformation are the focus of EU economic policy and the program of almost all political parties.
There have been two new partners at brainbows since 2024: Maria Vassilakou is particularly committed to urban transformation strategies and transition management with cities, companies and organizations. Stefan Nohel has been part of the brainbows team since 2018 and also acquired shares in the consultancy in November 2024.

Our range of services is diverse, as are the demands of our customers. Nevertheless, we pursue the same goals together: Implementing climate protection and decarbonization, remaining competitive and setting the course for transformation.
Our expertise is not limited to specific sectors and our focus has changed repeatedly over the course of our almost 25-year company history. We have orders from both the public and private sectors. We currently work primarily on infrastructure and mobility projects as well as with clients from the energy sector, the real estate and construction sector, the food industry and the cultural, sports and media sectors.
What all our projects have in common is that we accompany, develop and support in close cooperation with our clients. We create synergies and help our clients to successfully implement their visions in a dynamic environment.
