Our history
Founded in 2000 by Monika Langthaler and Christian Nohel, brainbows represents the culmination of over 14 years of collaborative experience in science and politics. Recognizing the opportunity to make a greater impact, they shifted their focus to empower businesses in achieving sustainability and environmental goals.
For Monika and Christian, the occupation of the Hainburger Au in 1984, which prevented the construction of a Danube power plant, was a key experience that continues to shape them today: then as now, they are committed to a socially and ecologically just future worth living.
Monika Langthaler and Christian Nohel were early pioneers of Austria’s Green movement, entering the political arena in 1990. Monika Langthaler was the youngest member of the Austrian parliament at the time until 1999, while Christian Nohel was a political advisor in the Green parliamentary group. Driven by a shared vision, they concluded their political careers after ten years to embark on a new passion
project: brainbows.
Monika and Christian were among the first in Austria to introduce sustainability into public consciousness and corporate boardrooms, advocating for a pragmatic and economically viable approach. Initially dismissed as a ‘niche topic,’ their foresight has been validated: sustainability and the green transformation are now central to EU economic policy.
brainbows welcomed two new partners in 2024. Maria Vassilakou specializes in urban transformation strategies and transition management for cities, companies, and organizations. Stefan Nohel, a member of the brainbows team since 2018, also became a partner in November 2024.
