The EU Commission has presented its new plans for achieving climate neutrality by 2050: According to these plans, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 90 percent by 2040. The possibility of international climate compensation is highly controversial and also viewed very critically by the European Advisory Council on Climate Change – it weakens the binding nature of the EU climate targets. <\/p>\n\n
And how is Austria doing? “Badly” says Sigrid Stagl, ecological economist and scientist of the year 2024, in the ZIB-2 interview. Austria would have to reduce its emissions “by more than eight percent every year” until 2030 in order to actually achieve a 55 percent reduction by 2030.
